Food & hosting 3 minute read
A night worth staying in.

A loose menu, the right soundtrack, and a table that leaves room for people. The DOMA formula for having friends over.
You do not need a reason, matching glassware, or a whole Saturday to prepare. Start with a manageable table and a few people you want to spend time with.
Start with the invitation
“Come over around six. I’m making pasta.” Say what the evening is, ask about dietary needs, and keep the group small enough that everybody can talk to everybody. Put the time and address in one message.
Make one thing. Assemble the rest.
Choose one main dish that can hold your attention. Put olives and something crunchy out before cooking. Dress a green salad at the last minute. Buy dessert, or bring out fruit and a few squares of chocolate.
For the main, read our plan for a pasta night. Before it reaches the table, set out one very good first plate. Keep the last ten minutes free for cooking, rather than rearranging the room.
Something sparkling, for two
A simple DOMA serving idea: squeeze half an orange and half a lemon, then divide the juice between two ice-filled glasses. Top each with about 150 ml chilled sparkling water. Add a small rosemary sprig if you have one. Taste before sweetening; an extra splash of water keeps it light. Serve immediately.
Set the room before the doorbell
Put water where people can reach it. Keep flowers low enough to see across the table. Turn on a lamp near the seating area and leave space for coats and bags. A clear surface and somewhere comfortable to land do more than a complicated centerpiece.
Give the evening a soundtrack
Start with SG Lewis for Keinemusik Radio. Keep it low enough to hear conversation. If dinner turns into a longer night, Folamour’s FLY Open Air set is the next tab to open.
Send this with: “I’ll do the pasta. You choose dessert.”
